Beon to play its part in Victoria’s biggest ever public transport project

Beon Energy Solutions (Beon) has been selected by the Melbourne Metro Rail Authority (MMRA) to design and build the complex power infrastructure that will support the construction of the $10.9 billion Metro Tunnel Project.

Beon’s General Manager, Glen Thomson, said the work Beon will perform for MMRA is a critical component of Victoria’s biggest ever public transport project.

“Our arrangement with MMRA will see Beon construct two electricity substations. One substation will be built within the Domain Station construction zone, and the other within the Arden Station construction zone in North Melbourne,” he said.

“The substations we build will power the enormous tunnel boring machines which will be working away under the city building the twin nine kilometre tunnels.

Tunnel boring machines can be up to 100 metres long and weigh up to 1,000 tons each. Several of these massive machines will be used to build different sections of the Metro Tunnel.

“This is great example of Beon listening to what the customer was looking for and delivering an innovative and value-for-money solution,” Glen said.

“We are proud to play an integral part in the construction of the Metro Tunnel to help deliver critical infrastructure for Victoria.

“Our forward order book continues to grow and we have an extensive list of organisations and projects we are delivering robust and innovative energy solutions for.

“MMRA is a great addition to the list, especially given it will play such a major role in delivering significant infrastructure for Victoria,” Glen added.

The Metro Tunnel Project will free up space in the City Loop to run more trains in and out of the city and deliver five new underground stations at Arden, Parkville, CBD North, CBD South and Domain. The project will unlock opportunities for significant urban renewal in inner city areas and create 4,700 jobs at the peak of construction.
