Teaming up for a cause: Beon’s Long History with the Surf Coast Century

This September, a group of Beon and Powercor employees were joined by colleagues, friends, and family to participate in the Surf Coast Century for the eighth year in a row.

This year we had six teams and one plucky individual representing Beon on the 100km course along the stunning Great Ocean Road.

Our runners hit the trails to raise money for the Robert Connor Dawes (RCD) Foundation and support the Alfie Chivers Research Fellowship with each donation supporting researchers in Melbourne to further understand and better treat brain tumours.

The researchers are currently working hard at categorising tumours based on genetic mutations within them (focussing on childhood tumours in this case) and developing a database of targeted treatments that can be shared to hospitals across the world.

Brain tumours are so complicated, each one slightly different, often rare, and have different genetic mutations that drive growth and/or survival and many hospitals get very limited opportunity to try to treat.

Pooling knowledge, treatment methods and trialling targeted treatment based on genetic mutations rather than broad brush chemotherapy is crucial work in changing the game for brain cancer patients.

Since Beon started participating in the Surf Coast Century we have raised over $160,000 in support of childhood brain cancer research and we are proud to continue this support of a cause close to our hearts.
